Written by on May 2, 2022

Megan Thee Stallion was honored with her own day in Houston on Sunday (May 1). In a ceremony attended by the city’s mayor Sylvester Turner and members of Houston City Council, the rapper received the key to the city, with May 2 officially declared Megan Thee Stallion Day, commemorating her impactful talent, philanthropy and influence.

“Came home real quick to get THEE KEY TO THEE CITY,” she wrote on Instagram. “and in honor of my mother and grandmother’s birthday MAY 2ND is officially MEGAN THEE STALLION DAY IN HOUSTON TX. thank you Mayor @sylvesterturner for honoring me today and I will continue to give back to the city that made me who I am today #htown.”

During her speech, a tearful Megan Thee Stallion talked about the impact her mother and grandmother — who died within weeks of each other in March 2019 — have had on her life and wanting to follow in their footsteps.

“Both of these women helped me grow into the woman that I am today,” she said. “I don’t know what kind of lady I would be if granny didn’t raise me to be so kind and so giving. You could walk by these ladies’ house and they givin’ out dollars, candy—whatever they’ve got, they’re givin’ it out the door.”

She continued, “And I always wanted to be just like that. I wanted to be nice like them. They made me feel so beautiful and so loved, and they made everybody they met feel just like that. So I was like, ‘When I grow up, I wanna be just like them.’”

Mayor Turner also paid tribute to the efforts Megan The Stallion has taken to help the city of Houston in times of need.

“Megan Thee Stallion has an extraordinary entertainment career, but we wanted to honor her for what she does offstage to lift people’s lives in underserved communities,” he said. “She assisted people after the 2021 winter storm, during the pandemic, and helped those struggling with homelessness. I look forward to watching her grow as an artist and humanitarian.”
