NIPSEY HUSSLE’S SUSPECTED KILLER ERIC HOLDER GETS NEW TRIAL DATE

Written by on May 4, 2022

Nipsey Hussle was gunned down in March 2019 and three years later, his suspected killer has yet to go to trial. But according to the Los Angeles Criminal Court calendar, Eric Holder will stand before a judge and jury on June 2.

A readiness hearing (often referred to as a pretrial conference or settlement conference) — a court proceeding where the defense counsel and prosecutor discuss the facts of a criminal case and either agree to resolve the case or not — is also scheduled for May 19.

As noted on the website, he will appear at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles, California.

Holder’s trial has been delayed multiple times. In September, it was reported Holder would appear in court on January 5, but the date came and went without a trial. At the time, Holder’s lawyer, Deputy Public Defender Aaron Jansen, told Rolling Stone his client was “nervous” but knew it was time to get the case moving to trial.

Jansen also said Holder was experiencing “a substantial mental health issue” following the death of his mother and was “off his medication” the day of the shooting.

The high-profile case was originally scheduled to go ahead in April 2020 before being postponed until early 2021 due to COVID-19. The murder trial was pushed back again in May 2021 after he refused to leave his cell. Two months later, the trial was delayed until December 2021 amid the assigned judge’s retirement and Holder’s defense attorney, famed O.J. Simpson prosecutor Christopher Darden, stepping down after receiving threats to his family.

Eric Holder pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of felony possession of a firearm in connection with the fatal shooting. He faces life in prison if convicted.
