The family of the 39-year-old had reported him missing. Sink had on an ankle monitor that led authorities to locate him at Planet Fitness. Reports say police found a needle in the tanning room with Derek, and his family confirmed he struggled with drugs, per NBC News. Last year, Derek Sink was charged with possession of a narcotic drug and possession of a controlled substance.

However, the Marion County Coroner’s Office said they haven’t determined his cause of death. His sentence ended up being one year of home detention with drug testing. That began in May.

There are not many details on how Planet Fitness employees missed the body in the tanning bed and room. According to its website, the gym on the 8000 block of Hardegan Street in Indianapolis is open until 9 p.m. on Fridays and 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

A chief Planet Fitness officer released a statement to the press about the incident. McCall Gosselin cited the company policy and revealed that the company is working with the police on the ongoing investigation. It’s unclear if Planet Fitness has suspended or terminated any employees at their
8707 Hardegan St, Indianapolis, IN 46227 location.

“We were deeply saddened by the passing of one of our members, and the franchise owner is working with the local authorities in their investigation,” Gosselin said.

Meanwhile, in another missing man case in the Midwest, police have changed their stances on what happened. Ryan Borgwardt had been missing since mid-August after going kayaking. After 54 days of searching and investigations, authorities concluded that he might’ve staged his disappearance.
