Coolio was found with drugs and drug-related paraphernalia by officers at the time of his death, it has been reported.
The Gangsta’s Paradise rapper died last year at the age of 59 while he was visiting friends, with his manager then believing he had died from a cardiac arrest.
On Thursday, the family spokesperson, Jarel ‘Jarez’ Posey shared an update and said the iconic musician died from a fentanyl overdose.
Posey told TMZ the family were informed by the coroner he had died because of the drug and also had traces of heroin and methamphetamines in his system.
According to the coroner’s report, obtained by Page Six, officers discovered three bags of drugs at the scene of Coolio’s death and were reported to have belonged to him.
Authorities also collected ‘a baggy with a brown powdery substance, foil with burn residue, a straw/tube, saline solution, a spoon with residue’ as well as over-the-counter CBD products and vitamins, the publication said.
Fentanyl is a strong opioid painkiller used to treat severe pain, for example during or after an operation or a serious injury, or pain from cancer, and is only available on prescription, according to the NHS.
The Sabrina The Teenage Witch actor died suddenly at a friend’s house in LA, with emergency services reportedly working to save his life for around 45 minutes.
Coolio – real name Artis Leon Ivey Jr – was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The music icon reportedly died without a will, meaning that seven of his 10 children have been named as probable beneficiaries.
Coolio was father to 10 children, seven of whom are adults and three who remain minors.
The report states his seven adult children are named as his next of kin and the likely beneficiaries to his estate, however the three youngest were seemingly not named in the forms.
As reported by The Blast, a probate was filed by Coolio’s former manager to begin the process of estimating the value of the rapper’s estate, which is believed to be over $300,000 (£248,000).
The Let’s Be Real star’s manager previously told TMZ that, before his death, Coolio traveled from Vegas so that he could sort out an issue with his passport, before heading to Germany for a scheduled performance over the weekend.
Sheila Finegan, who represented the late musician at Trinity Artists International, later told PA: ‘We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and client, Coolio, who passed away this afternoon.
