Shanice Opens Up About Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Recently, Shanice shared her health journey during an appearance on ‘Good Morning America,’ where she spoke with Michael Strahan. During the chat, the ‘I Love Your Smile’ singer told Strahan that doctors initially suspected something was wrong eight years ago, but they later determined it was just a cyst. She admitted that fear of what the doctors might find led her to avoid mammograms for eight years.

Eventually, she discovered a lump in her breast and realized that the cyst wasn’t going away, prompting her to seek medical attention. After undergoing a mammogram and ultrasound, doctors unfortunately confirmed that she had cancer.

Shanice shared that doctors initially suspected she had an early form of breast cancer called Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS). After performing double mastectomy surgery on her in May, doctors revealed that she had a stage 1 tumor measuring one centimeter. The musician expressed that hearing about the surgery made her “lose her smile.” She emphasized her desire to do an exclusive interview to encourage women battling breast cancer to “continue to keep smiling.”

“I just want to tell women how important it is to get your mammograms. If I would have gone sooner, I could have caught [my breast cancer diagnosis] when it was just at stage zero. Put that fear aside,” she said. “If you get checked early you can beat this thing. It’s not a death sentence. If you can get there early, you’ll live.”

Additionally, the 51-year-old songstress revealed that her husband, Flex Alexander, and their two children, Imani and Elijah, have stood by her side and provided immense support throughout her journey.

“I had the support of my family. So Flex, after my surgery he helped me clear out my drains, he helped me take my showers, he made my meals. My kids were very supportive, my mom was there. I had all of my prayer warriors praying for me,” Shanice continued.
