Something heavy is happening far from the usual headlines, and it’s leaving an entire community shaken. In a small Minnesota city, fear, uncertainty, and sudden silence are replacing what once felt like everyday normalcy. And residents say it all shifted fast after reported ICE activity, including a tense situation tied to El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant, put the town on edge.

ICE Hits El Tapatio Restaurant During Lunch
Although the streets appeared calm on Friday, residents say the real changes showed up behind closed doors. Several restaurants and shops posted signs announcing closures or modified operations after reported ICE activity in the area. One resident, Brentt Fees, said agents detained someone just across the street from his workplace. “I’ve seen with my two eyes ICE detaining people,” Mohamed added, describing the growing tension in the city of just over 21,000 people.
One of the most talked-about incidents involved El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant, which shut its doors after federal agents reportedly visited during lunch hours and later returned, detaining the restaurant’s owners and a dishwasher nearby. A 20-year-old who says his parents own the business shared that he plans to reopen the restaurant under his leadership, but the emotional toll remains heavy. Supporters stopped by to check in, with one visitor noting his own job at a nearby liquor store has lost nearly 75% of its business since enforcement activity ramped up.
Community Shaken As ICE Activity Increases
While much of the attention around recent immigration enforcement has centered on the Twin Cities, folks in Willmar, Minnesota, say they’re feeling the impact just as deeply. Community members report an uptick in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity that has left families afraid to leave their homes and local businesses scrambling to adjust. “You have families that are scared for their life,” said Abdullahi Mohamed, a Willmar resident. “People [are] refusing to come out of their house.”
Calls For Unity As Tensions Rise
Residents say the ripple effects go beyond businesses. Longtime community members are calling for unity and accountability, while others are demanding political change. “We’re not scared,” said Willmar resident Abdulcadir Gaal. Meanwhile, Mayor Doug Reese urged calm, asking neighbors to respect one another and focus on keeping the community safe during an already tense moment. This situation is still unfolding — but one thing is clear: even miles away from major cities, communities are feeling the weight of these actions in real time.
