What started as online tension ended in real-life tragedy — and now, a major prison sentence has been handed down. A case that shook an Ohio community is back in headlines after a judge delivered a punishment that will follow one man for most of his life. At the center of it all is 12-year-old Isabella “Bella” Carlos, whose life was cut short while she slept peacefully in her own bed.

From Online Drama To Deadly Violence
According to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office, 24-year-old Antawan Benson was sentenced Monday to 67 years in prison for his role in a deadly shooting spree that targeted multiple homes in the Dayton area. Benson was convicted earlier this month on murder charges. Additional charges included discharging a firearm into a habitation, felonious assault, and aggravated menacing. The sentence stems from an August 2024 shooting that claimed Isabella’s life.
Prosecutors say the violence was sparked by a social media post involving Benson’s cousin. On Aug. 22, 2024, Benson and his brother, Javen Conner, allegedly approached a woman sitting in her car in Trotwood to confront her about the post. Another woman and several children were also inside the vehicle. While no shots were fired during that encounter, authorities say the situation escalated hours later in a devastating way.
Midnight Gunfire Ends Young Girl’s Life
Just after 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 23, Benson and Conner allegedly opened fire on three separate homes using an AK-47 and an AR-15, riddling the residences with bullets. Inside one of those homes was Isabella, a seventh grader who had been asleep in her bedroom. First responders pronounced her dead at the scene after police rushed to the home following reports of gunfire.
During sentencing, Judge Gerald Parker spoke directly to Benson, emphasizing the irreversible damage caused by his actions. According to courtroom reports, the judge noted that evidence suggested Isabella did not die instantly, describing the details as “gut-wrenching.” Parker also criticized Benson and Conner for allegedly posting photos of empty gun magazines on Facebook after the shooting. He also called the act a display of “false bravado” and publicly condemning the behavior from the bench.
Family Mourns Isabella, Justice Continues Unfolding
Isabella Carlos’ family also addressed the court, putting a human face on the loss. Her obituary described her as a “beautiful and intelligent young lady,” full of promise. Her aunt, Donnetta Dewberry, spoke through tears about the future moments stolen from her niece — prom, first love, first dates, and simply growing up. While expressing pain and anger, Dewberry also offered a message of faith, asking God to have mercy on the brothers despite the lifelong devastation left behind.
Benson’s brother, Javen Conner, who was convicted in a separate trial on similar charges, is scheduled to be sentenced on January 8. The case continues to serve as a sobering reminder of how online conflicts can spiral into irreversible consequences. And, how innocent lives are often the ones most affected.
