Missy Elliott added another crown to a legendary career. The hip-hop pioneer received the Icon Award at the Gala of the Stars in Beverly Hills, with the honor presented by Janet Jackson — two architects of modern music sharing one stage.
The night was bigger than an award. The benefit raised more than $760,000 for Dancers Against Cancer, and Missy used her moment to shine the light back on the dancers, telling them they are not props — “Y’all are artists too.”
It is the kind of full-circle respect the culture loves to see: an artist who changed how music looks and sounds, honored by a fellow icon, for a cause that protects the performers behind the performers.
