Burruss exclusively told PEOPLE that filing for divorce was a tough choice. However, the couple, she said, is committed to co-parenting their kids amicably. Kandi and Todd share two kids. Their son Ace was born in January 2016, while their daughter Blaze arrived via surrogate in November 2019. They each have adult daughters from previous relationships.

“After deep thought and a lot of prayer, I’ve made the decision to move forward with a divorce. This is a difficult and emotional time, but my focus remains on protecting my peace, being the best mother I can be, and co-parenting with love and respect,” Kandi Burruss told PEOPLE.

She said this next chapter will be about pouring into her work, family, and own growth. “I’m grateful to everyone who supported us throughout the years, and I ask for privacy, grace, and understanding as we navigate this transition with our family,” Burruss added.

While Kandi has been open about the divorce, fans of the longtime couple haven’t yet heard from Todd Tucker. However, one day after the singer filed her petition, the parents linked up to celebrate Blaze’s 6th birthday.

Despite the relationship reaching its end, business is still booming for Kandi and Todd Tucker! Just like their child custody terms, it’s unclear how their shared ventures will be divided. In the last decade, they co-founded several businesses, including restaurants and a trucking company. Two of their eateries, Old Lady Gang and Blaze, are closed permanently. According to Black Enterprise, Montego Pacific was the landlord of the Blaze location, and sued Todd and Kandi’s business, Burruss Tucker Restaurant Group for $56,000 in repairs and $154,000 in back rent. In July, the company requested an emergency hearing, accusing Montego Pacific of demanding more money outside of litigation. Kandi has reportedly been dropped from the lawsuit as a defendant since being filed in the spring.

Independently, Kandi Burruss filed for divorce with just weeks away from starring on Broadway in the musical, ‘& Juliet.’ She first announced the stage return in October. She’ll be performing from December until March as the character Angélique.

“I could not be more thrilled to return to the Broadway stage in this incredible musical,” Burruss said. “As a songwriter myself, I am such a fan of Max Martin’s genius mind, and to get to come back to Broadway in this joyful musical that celebrates his catalog is a dream come true,” she said in October.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Todd flooded his Instagram Story with photos of a lounge space and a new podcast promo. The following day, TheJasmineBrand reported that Tucker had signed on as a producer for the women’s sports podcast, ‘The PlayHER Lounge.
