Christmas Celebration Leads To Violence, Mayor Speaks Out

The shootings occurred on a busy night in the Loop. The night drew thousands of people for Chicago’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Millennium Park. Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the violence Saturday morning, calling it “emotional whiplash” for residents who had gathered to celebrate. He condemned the so-called “unsanctioned after-gatherings” and urged adults to accompany young people at large events, while warning that such incidents set the city back and evoke fear.

“I recognize this feels like emotional whiplash after this incredible celebration last night, where thousands of people gathered Chicagoans who were enjoying our tree lighting ceremony, thousands of Chicagoans came to express their love for our city…” Johnson claimed.
