What started as a typical Saturday shopping run at a Marshalls in Kearney, New Jersey, quickly turned into a situation no one saw coming. Authorities say 25-year-old Amber Thompson and another woman, who has not been publicly identified, got into a dispute while waiting in the checkout line. And, let’s just say…the vibe did not stay in the store.

According to police, the disagreement was over the speed of the line. After some words were exchanged, the other woman and her family decided to leave the store and head to their car. But things escalated when Thompson allegedly purchased a set of kitchen knives from inside the store. Allegedly, Thompson unwrapped one in the parking lot and confronted the woman outside. Furthermore, the incident ended with the victim needing medical attention for injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Thompson Cuffed, Marshalls Reacts, & An Ongoing Investigation

Thompson was later found in the Marshalls’ bathroom, where officers say they recovered a knife nearby. She’s now facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon. The incident has left local shoppers shaken, with many questioning whether increased store security is needed. Marshalls released a statement saying safety is a top priority and praised the swift response from the Kearney Police Department. Furthermore, the case remains under investigation.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred in the parking lot outside of our store last week. At Marshalls, the safety and security of our Associates and customers is important to us, and we’re grateful for the swift response of the Kearney Police Department. As this is a police matter, we’d respectfully defer any further comment to the Kearney Police Department,” revealed a Marshalls spokesperson.

This Ain’t The First Shopping Trip Gone Left

Sadly, there’s been an uptick in violent store disputes lately—and this one turned especially tragic. As previously reported, a longtime employee at an Eastpointe McDonald’s was fatally attacked by a coworker after a heated argument escalated. Though Harris had sent the employee home, the 26-year-old suspect allegedly returned minutes later wearing a mask and launched a vicious stabbing, according to witnesses. A drive-thru customer tried to stop the attack by firing a warning shot and detaining the suspect until police arrived, but Harris— a mother of six—later died from her injuries.
