According to Deadline, ‘The Chi’ will come to an end after its upcoming eighth season. The decision comes ahead of production on the finale, giving the creative team the opportunity to craft a proper ending for the characters.
In a statement on Instagram, Lena Waithe reflected on the show’s success and impact: “After much reflection, we have made the decision to end The Chi with Season 8. I know, for the sake of our story and our characters, it’s the right thing. It’s been the honor of my life to helm the longest-running Black drama on television… It’s something I don’t take lightly.”

Lena Waithe continued to discuss the decision to bring ‘The Chi’ to an end in her IG post. She explained that when she created the show, “it wasn’t just about making a TV show — it was about owning our narratives and telling our stories with truth, care, nuance, and complexity.” After much thought, Lena Waithe confirmed, “I am committed to delivering a final season that our Chi Family deserves.”
Lena Waithe also highlighted a historic milestone, noting that “The Chi has become the longest-running Black drama in premium cable history, surpassing the series Soul Food.” Looking ahead, she reassured fans: “I still plan on telling stories, continuing to build community, and making space for us all to be seen.”
